JANUARY 16TH MEETING
OUR 1ST. IN
2010
FEATURING
MICHAELE
HARRINGTON
ART EDUCATOR AND EXHIBITOR
Folks, get ready for a most enjoyable and informative artist's
presentation on the afternoon of January 16th. Michaele Harrington will discuss
"critiquing art work." If you want to have your paintings, photos,
prints or sculptures critiqued bring one or two to the meeting. Michaele
Harrington is one of the most eclectic artists we'll have a chance to
meet. "I never know where I’m going
when I begin an abstract. I watch the way the colors interact and then I
push the paint to do more, or else lift out paint that has gone
awry." Michaele generates
conversation with her works in progress, "I usually stop working on a
piece (a painting is never finished!) when I happen to reach a point
where a satisfying set of relationships is in balance." Her work is exciting, reflecting her life's
events. On her first trip to Morocco
she became fascinated with its desert environment and it's contrast of aged
surfaces, rhythms and patterns as opposed to the barrenness of areas and with
the people who lived there. Her series of paintings --- certainly expose her
inner perceptions. While on a trip to Ireland -- her
parents came from Irish and Polish stock -- her paintings began to explore the
existential question, “Who Am I?” She began this exploration by looking at her
cultural ancestry. After reading about
her parents’ Irish and Polish ethnic histories, she traced their cultural
origins back to a common denominator: Celtic migrations from the Alps into
Western Europe, parts of Eastern Europe and Asia Minor.
She had always loved the sinewy nature of Celtic art, hence immersed
herself in Celtic mythology, and symbolism, and their meditative process,
constructing paintings reflecting her new understanding. As she pointed our,
"Layers are a way of expressing the hidden vs. the revealed, and much of
my work exploits layering. Sometimes the surface hints at what might be found
with a little digging; other times the surface yields no clue as to what lies
underneath…the exposed surface is texturally rich and either suggests secret
things hidden below or else it is containing whatever yearns to
escape." Eclectic? Yes! Michael feeds herself with abstracted work as her
my main course, while traditional figurative painting is her dessert. So, come and get some critique…..
